Since 1941, the country stopped on Veteran’s Day to recognize the brave men and women who defend our country. Businesses, schools, and colleges closed, cities large and small held grand parades. And then Vietnam happened.

Suddenly Veterans Day wasn’t so important anymore. Veterans were maligned. There were little or no parades, banks still closed, and to many people who had the day off, it was just another bank holiday.

Enter the first Iraq war in 1991 and a US victory . Since then, whether Americans agree on the justification of war or not, there is a profound appreciation of our military and the sacrifice they make day in and day out.

I love to see people stop a service person to thank them for their service. It doesn’t matter which uniform they’re wearing, they are always humble, and seem grateful that someone thought enough to say thank you.

Saying thank you is one small way to show your appreciation, but there are many others from the Wounded Warrior Project to the USO. Giving online is easy it takes about two minutes, thirty seconds if you know your credit card by heart like I do. 🙂

If you do nothing else today, take some time to say a prayer for our military and their families. If you see them around, shake their hand to express your gratitude. And if you can’t get up from your computer, log onto https://usowishbook.uso.org/how-to-buy-a-gift/ .To those who do so much for all of us, find a way to say thank you.
